Yes. All visits to Los Tarrales Natural Reserve must be arranged in advance. To ensure the best experience, we recommend booking accommodations and guided tours at least 48 hours before your arrival.

More than 370 species of birds have been recorded at Los Tarrales, making it one of the premier birdwatching destinations in Guatemala and Central America. The reserve is particularly known for species such as the Horned Guan, Azure-rumped Tanager, Blue-and-white Mockingbird, and many regional specialties.

Is Los Tarrales only for birdwatchers?

Not at all. While Los Tarrales is internationally recognized for birdwatching, guests also visit to enjoy hiking, waterfalls, wildlife viewing, photography, coffee experiences, nature walks, and the tranquility of the reserve.

Is Los Tarrales family-friendly?
​

Absolutely. Families with children are warmly welcome. If you are traveling with children, please contact us before your visit so we can recommend the most suitable accommodations and activities for your family.

How many days should I stay at Los Tarrales?
​

Most guests stay between one and three nights. Birdwatchers, photographers, and nature enthusiasts often choose longer stays to fully explore the reserve’s diverse habitats and elevations.

How far is Los Tarrales from Antigua, Guatemala City, and Lake Atitlán?
​

Los Tarrales is located approximately 2.5 to 3 hours from Guatemala City and Antigua Guatemala, and about 1.5 hours from Panajachel on Lake Atitlán.

Do I need a four-wheel-drive vehicle to reach the reserve?
​

No. Under normal weather conditions, most passenger vehicles can comfortably access Los Tarrales.

What wildlife can I see at Los Tarrales?
​

In addition to its exceptional birdlife, Los Tarrales is home to white-tailed deer, agoutis, coatis, kinkajous, armadillos, squirrels, reptiles, amphibians, butterflies, and a remarkable diversity of native flora and fauna. Occasionally, more elusive species such as pumas and margays may also be present within the reserve.

Does Los Tarrales have Wi-Fi?

Yes. Wi-Fi powered by Starlink satellite internet is available throughout most guest rooms and common areas. Due to the reserve’s mountainous terrain and natural setting, connectivity may vary slightly in some locations.

Are meals available at Los Tarrales?
​

Yes. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are available for guests. Meals are prepared daily using a planned menu that changes regularly and highlights fresh, local ingredients. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, and other dietary requirements can often be accommodated with advance notice.

Can dietary restrictions and food allergies be accommodated?
​

Yes. We regularly accommodate vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, nut-free, and other dietary requirements. Please let us know your needs before your arrival so we can prepare accordingly.

Can I bring outside food or beverages?
​

Outside food and beverages are not permitted within the reserve. We of course make exceptions for small children etc.

Are pets allowed?
​

No. To protect wildlife and preserve the tranquility of the reserve, pets are not permitted.

Is Los Tarrales an eco-friendly reserve?

​

Yes. Conservation is at the heart of Los Tarrales. The reserve has protected its forests and wildlife for generations and operates under a self-sustaining conservation model supported by ecotourism, sustainable coffee production, responsible forestry, honey production, and ornamental plant cultivation. Renewable hydroelectric power generated on-site helps reduce the reserve’s environmental footprint.

What should I pack for my visit?

We recommend comfortable walking shoes, lightweight long-sleeved clothing, a rain jacket during the wet season, binoculars for wildlife viewing, insect repellent, sunscreen, and a camera.
